Global Classroom
Global Classroom extends the World Affairs Council’s message of global understanding to K-12 classrooms by empowering educators, students, and community members with tools, knowledge, and perspectives to engage in global studies, cultivate 21st century skills, and foster meaningful connections, locally and globally.
Educating for Global Competence
The World Affairs Council’s Global Classroom program provides opportunities for students and educators in the greater Seattle region to stay up-to-date on global issues and become active, globally-engaged citizens. What does it mean to be globally-engaged? Why is it important to educate for global competence? The following resources provide in-depth answers to these questions and articulate the frameworks that guide Global Classroom’s programming.
Defining Global and International Education
“Global education and international education are complementary approaches with different emphases. The integration of both perspectives is imperative to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for responsible participation in a democratic society and in a global community in the twenty-first century.” - National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS)
“International Education seeks to integrate global perspectives in a variety of academic disciplines that include Social Studies, Environmental and Sustainability Education, and World Languages. International Education promotes global competence, which is a component of basic education. It provides students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills to understand and prosper in today’s interconnected world.” - OSPI: International Education
Educating for Global Competence: Preparing Our Youth to Engage the World
“Contemporary societies are marked by new global trends—economic, cultural, technological, and environmental shifts that are part of a rapid and uneven wave of globalization. The growing global interdependence that characterizes our time calls for a generation of individuals who can engage in effective global problem solving and participate simultaneously in local, national, and global civic life. Put simply, preparing our students to participate fully in today’s and tomorrow’s world demands that we nurture their global competence.”

Virtual/Hybrid: Due to the pandemic, Global Classroom has shifted our programming to virtual models to ensure educators have access to our events and opportunities while we are remote, and as we navigate the transition back to in-person education. Programs include guest speakers, panelists, asynchronous activities, an up-to-date curriculum resource guide, and clock hours.
Participants leave with greater understanding of global issues and stronger connections to their colleagues in both the greater Seattle community and abroad. Curriculum Resource Guides are published following every event and posted free online, including STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) specific content.

Our Global Competence Certificate Portfolio program allows students to develop, reflect, and demonstrate their global competency in our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. The program was created to track students’ development of competencies that are critical to their success as globally-engaged citizens, through the successful completion of a website portfolio and presentation in which students are required to encompass their experiences and perspectives centering three key competencies,
Students will present their portfolios to educators and staff upon completion to receive a Global Competence Certificate, issued by the World Affairs Council of Seattle. Students who present their portfolios in 9-11th grades, but do not meet the requirements, will also have the opportunity to continue developing their portfolios, and earn the certificate later in their high school careers. Students participating in the Heritage Language Program are able to complete their portfolios in their Heritage Language (Spanish, Russian, and Romanian) and are eligible to receive the Global Seal of Biliteracy, issued by the Ethnic Heritage Council in addition to the Global Competence Certificate. Learn more about the Global Competence Certificate Portfolio and get started today!
International Youth Programs: Every year, Global Classroom partners with the Council’s Global Leadership Exchange (GLX) Team (formerly known as the International Visitor Program) to host visiting students from across the globe here in Seattle. We support GLX in providing international students with homestays and a full programming calendar of meetings with local organizations, as well as our own workshops to help make their time in Seattle educational, fun, and fulfilling. Click here for information on how to become a host family!
Classroom Visits: Each year, Global Classroom has the opportunity to welcome international leaders, participating in GLX exchanges, directly into classrooms in the Greater Seattle area and throughout Washington State. Connecting the local to the global, these classroom visits bring students and international visitors together to share their perspectives on what’s happening in the world; to reinforce curriculum with lived experience; and to create meaningful relationships beyond borders. We look forward to implementing several virtual classroom visits this spring, featuring international visitors representing Morocco, Malawi, and Zambia! 2023 - 2024 Grants for Global Education
OSPI OER Adaptation Grant: With support from OSPI’s Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB), the World Affairs Council of Seattle’s Global Classroom will utilize OER resources in Social Studies to create content in Heritage Languages including, but not limited to Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian. This project will supplement our Global Competence Certificate Portfolio Project that is open to high school youth and students across Washington State, for use in Social Studies, World Language, Heritage Language, Language Arts, and other global-oriented programs. The focus will be on adapting/creating/implementing project-based, interdisciplinary curriculum that will support global education learning (knowledge, skills, dispositions) through Heritage Language. In addition to the disciplines described above, we will adapt SEL (Social- Emotional Learning) Culturally Responsive Teaching standards/elements into our work. We are also interested in examining the World Language (Heritage Language) OER resources.
