This resource was created to supplement Global Classroom Book Club,
Beyond Guilt Trips: Mindful Travel in an Unequal World
To kick off the new year, Global Classroom is thrilled to revisit Dr. Anu Taranath’s timely and compelling book, Beyond Guilt Trips: Mindful Travel in an Unequal World. A Finalist for three book awards and featured in YES!, Bitch, and AFAR Magazines, Beyond Guilt Trips delves into issues related to identity, social justice, and cross-cultural perspectives through the lens of travel and tourism.
This curriculum resource guide provides educators, students, and community members with tools and resources to identify and engage in mindful travel practices both locally and globally. Readers will understand the intersectionality of travel across differences in race, culture, wealth, and access with grace, reflection, and accountability. Educators will identify ways to inspire their students to actively participate in thoughtful travel as local and global citizens focusing on themes such as identity, race, power, hierarchy, social justice, wealth, and culture discussed in the book. This guide provides insight into how we can rethink travel in an unequal world and what tools we can utilize to engage locally and globally with more humility and awareness. As we engage with others (at home or abroad), how can we navigate differences
and discomfort with accountability and connection?
