Understanding China’s Global Ambitions with Scott Tong
February 21st, 2018 12:00PM -1:30PM
What role do citizens play in motivating their countries national interests? How can we understand the “Chinese Dream” through a 1.3 billion person body politic? How can individual life stories help us understand the larger journey of a civilization?
Join the World Affairs Council for lunch with Scott Tong, who moved to Shanghai to open the NPR affiliated Marketplace’s first bureau in China, where he reconnected with his estranged family. He discovered rich accounts of his relatives’ lives extending back over five generations, spanning the fall of the Qing dynasty to the reforms under Deng Xiaoping. Scott will guide us in exploring current questions about China’s civil society and its role in regional security, international law, and globalization.
