Combating Human Trafficking: Global to Local
On October 22nd, 2014 Global Classroom partnered with Stolen Youth to engage teachers on the issue of human trafficking. Jane Charles, Producer and Co-founder of Stolen Youth, introduced teachers to the book and new film SOLD about a girl in Nepal who becomes a victim of human trafficking and finds a way out. How can teachers use this book or film to raise awareness among students? Next, we were joined by community members and a panel of experts including Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, 36th legislative district; Dr. Dana Raigrodski, UW School of Law; and Robert Beiser, Seattle Against Slavery, with moderator Melinda Giovengo, YouthCare. They discussed the causes and consequences of human trafficking globally and shed light on the prevalence of this issue here in the Pacific Northwest. This packet contains several resources including news articles, Common Core-aligned lesson plans, local and global organizations, and information about human trafficking around the world.
